Call for Submitters and Participants for the 2026 Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun Tanka Competition! The submission method will change this year! We will be hosting the 2026 Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun Tanka Competition, welcoming Mr. Takeshi Kuroiwa (Representative of the Japan Tanka Poets Club, Chief Editor and Selection Committee Member of "Kokoro no Hana"). The event will include a commemorative lecture, recitation, and critiques. We look forward to many submissions and participation.

Approximately 1300 years ago, in the capital city of Nara, eight statues were brought into existence by order of Empress Kōmyōshi. These eight statues—Gobujō, Shakara, Kutabanda, Gandharva, Ashura, Garuda, Kinnara, and Bibakara—still remain at Kōfuku-ji Temple today. They stand quietly, and somehow with a sense of loneliness. Their origins are shrouded in mystery—a new musical that depicts, from a unique perspective, the life of the nameless sculptor who lay behind the creation of the Ashura statue.
