Gounkai is celebrating its 29th year this year. The annual summer performance will feature leading actor Tomoeda Taketo performing a piece that we hope everyone will enjoy. This year's piece is "Sumida River." This tragic, mad Noh play is a masterpiece that conveys the feelings of a mother who loves her child. This time, the play will be performed without the appearance of a child actor. In a pre-performance discussion, Takakuwa Izumi, honorary researcher at the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, and Noh and Kyogen researcher Oda Sachiko will talk about the direction of "Sumida River." Guests will also enjoy the Kyogen piece "Hikuzu" by Nomura Mannojo.

This is a rare event that will showcase the breadth and depth of Noh through the performance of five schools of shite actors, five different plays, and five different performance styles. Please come along in August, when full-scale Noh performances are rare!
