Noh play: Ebira
On his way to the capital, a monk from the west stops at the Ikuta River in Suma no Ura. As the monk gazes upon a beautiful and historic plum tree blooming there, a man from the village appears and tells him the story of the plum tree's origins. During the Genpei War, Kajiwara Genta Kageyoshi, a member of the Genji side, elegantly plucked a branch from this tree, put it in his quiver, and fought with it, earning him military honors.
The man then goes on to recount the details of the Genpei War at Ichinotani, revealing that he is in fact Kageyoshi's ghost, before disappearing.
Late at night, as the monk takes a nap in the shade of the plum tree, Kageyoshi's ghost appears in his dream in armor, with a plum blossom stuck in his quiver. Kageyoshi tells the monk the horrific scenes of the asura realm, and asks the monk for his condolences. Eventually, Kageki, overcome by the pain of the demons, reenacts the Battle of Ikuta Forest during the Battle of Ichinotani, and disappears as the day breaks...
Kajiwara Kagetoki is notorious for being in conflict with Minamoto no Yoshitsune and for slandering Yoritomo. His eldest son, Kageki, is also trusted by Yoritomo, and is known for his many military exploits and anecdotes, such as fighting for the vanguard in the Battle of Ujigawa, where Kiso Yoshinaka was defeated, and fighting alongside his father in the Battle of Ichinotani. This Noh play vividly depicts Kageki as a splendid and elegant young warrior.
Kyogen Kamabara
Taro is lazy and doesn't go to work. His angry wife chases him around, brandishing a stick with a sickle tied to it. An arbitrator steps in to stop the act, but Taro decides to cut his stomach open in front of his wife rather than be insulted like this. However, his wife leaves him with a parting shot: "Go ahead and do it if you can." Taro is left alone... What will become of this man who can no longer back out? The performance of the shite, where vanity and attachment to life intersect, is a major highlight, and Nomura Mansaku and Nomura Mansai play the father-son couple. Noh play Sotowa Komachi Ichidon no Shidai The setting is Abeno, on the outskirts of the capital. An old beggar woman with a walking stick appears in the twilight, trying to avoid being seen. The beauty of her youth has faded, and the 100-year-old woman is now ugly and unrecognizable, lamenting her old age. When she gets tired of walking, she sits down on a rotten tree by the roadside to rest for a while.
Just then, a monk from Mount Koya on his way to the capital passes by. The monk realizes that the tree the woman is sitting on is a stupa and scolds her, trying to admonish her with Buddhist teachings, but is defeated in the argument. The woman goes on to say that she is the former Ono no Komachi, a woman of great talent who enjoyed fame for her beauty. She is ashamed of her now destitute self, wandering aimlessly in a tattered straw raincoat and hat, now that her looks have faded.
Soon, someone possesses Komachi, and she becomes delirious. In the past, Komachi never responded to the many men who approached her because of her arrogance, but one of them, Fukakusa no Shosho, possessed her because of his deep devotion. Komachi dons a black hat and long silk robe and reenacts the story of how Shosho used to visit Komachi every night, braving the elements, until he died on the 100th night without being able to fulfill his wish...
Old women's plays are particularly important among Noh plays. In addition to the seasoned flavor of old women's plays, this Noh also has the interesting tension-filled conversations, the realistic impersonations of begging, going mad, and the 100-night visits. Ono no Komachi is a legendary beauty who has left many stories behind. Even in her delusions of love and the pain of old age, her pride and arrogance can be seen, and she is portrayed as a strong and human character.
