overview
The Surakarta Royal Family (Kalatong Surakarta) is the legitimate descendant of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, which arose in Central Java and expanded its influence throughout present-day Indonesia. The capital was moved to its current location (Solo) in the mid-18th century, where it remains to this day. Kalatong means "residence of the king," and has served as a source of political and mystical power, as well as a cultural center. This groundbreaking performance, co-hosted by the Surakarta Royal Family, Oto Kobo, and Kartika & Kusmo, features a devotional dance called "Srimpi" performed by the royal daughters and a solo dance by Princess Kus Murtiya Wangdangsari, a master of dance. Through this masterful performance, we are sure to see the essence of Javanese women's dance revealed and breathe new life into it.
In addition, for this performance, Kartika & Kusumo, trained by the leader of the royal gamelan, Saptno, will be in charge of the music, along with royal singer Tuti Rati Udiyastuti. We hope that the music and dance, and Java and Japan, will shine and resonate with each other in exquisite harmony. TAMURA Fumiko
