北京の民家に暮す老夫婦。2019年、天安門事件から30年が経つ節目の年初め、妻は脳腫瘍で余命３ヶ月の宣告を受けた。夫はすでに癌を患っている。老夫婦には思い残すことがあった。それはひとり息子の天安門事件での不可解な死を抱えながら何もせずに生きてきたことへの悔恨だった。人生の終焉に、二人は30年間の苦しみや罪悪感を捨て、息子の死に向き合うことを決意する。余命わずかの身に恐れることは何もない。そして一世一代の目標を立てる。それは事件の起きた六月四日、即ち息子の命日に、あの天安門広場で息子を弔うことだ。人はたったそれだけのことか、というだろうか…。

解説

この作品は、2019年香港で初演され、翌年の香港舞台演劇賞で5部門を受賞。しかしその後、中国の国家安全維持法が香港で施行され、香港の民主的自由への侵害は深刻になっている。香港の演劇人が彼らの置かれた抑圧の状況を、天安門事件を題材に、その被害者遺族たちと連帯することで、国家に対する抵抗を描いた作品である。2022年、Ｐカンパニーによって日本初演。その上演成果において小田島雄志翻訳戯曲賞を受賞。

Story

An elderly couple living in a private home in Beijing. At the beginning of 2019, the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident, the wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was told she had only three months to live. The husband has already been diagnosed with cancer. The elderly couple had something they regretted. They regretted living with the mysterious death of their only son in the Tiananmen Square incident and doing nothing. At the end of their lives, the couple decide to let go of the pain and guilt of the past 30 years and face their son's death. With only a short time left to live, they have nothing to fear. And they set a once-in-a-lifetime goal. That is to mourn their son at Tiananmen Square on June 4th, the day the incident occurred, that is, the anniversary of their son's death. Is that all a person can do?

This work premiered in Hong Kong in 2019 and won five awards at the Hong Kong Stage Play Awards the following year. However, China's National Security Law was subsequently enacted in Hong Kong, and the infringement of democratic freedoms in Hong Kong has become serious. This work depicts Hong Kong theater people's resistance against the state by standing in solidarity with the families of the victims of the Tiananmen Square incident, and expressing the situation of oppression they find themselves in. It premiered in Japan in 2022 by P Company. The performance won the Odashima Yushi Translated Drama Award.
