"Izutsu" is the story of the first love of Ariwara no Narihira, a handsome nobleman of rare beauty. It was created based on the 23rd chapter of the Tale of Ise, a bittersweet story of pure love. The author, Zeami, praised the piece as "the finest flower," and it is said to be the greatest masterpiece of wig works.
