Noh play: Eguchi

A group of traveling monks (Waki and Wakitsure) on a pilgrimage to western Japan travel down the Yodo River and visit the village of Eguchi. It is known as a place where brothels once lined the streets, and where it is said that Eguchi no Kimi, the head of the inn, refused the request of the monk Saigyo for lodging for the night. The traveling monks hum a poem that Saigyo wrote about Eguchi no Kimi at that time, in front of the site where Eguchi no Kimi once stood. Then, a woman from the village (Mae-Shite) appears and tells them that there is a reply to their poem. It is a poem advising Saigyo to abandon his attachment to this world, and she reveals that she is Eguchi no Kimi before disappearing. (Intermission) The traveling monks, having been told by a villager (ai) that Lady Eguchi is a reincarnation of Fugen Bodhisattva, are mourning her when the spirit of Lady Eguchi (ato-shite) appears in a boat accompanied by a courtesan (tsure). After showing a magnificent boating spectacle, she laments her fate as a courtesan and dances quietly, speaking of the impermanence of this world. She then explains that this world is a temporary one and urges people to break free from attachment, and suddenly she transforms into the form of Fugen Bodhisattva, and the boat turns into a white elephant and disappears into the western sky. Kyogen Hikuzu The master (ado), thinking of serving thin tea to the pilgrims who come to the memorial service for Uji Bridge, orders Taro Kaja (shite) to grind the hikuzu.

Noh play: The Little Swordsmith

When Tachibana Michinari (Wakitsure), who serves Ichijoin, visits the swordsmith Sanjo Kokaji Munechika (Waki), he conveys an imperial command to forge a sword. However, in order to complete the sword to be presented to the Emperor, a partner of equal skill is needed, so Munechika goes to the shrine to seek the protection of his tutelary deity, Inari Myojin. Then, a mysterious boy (the main character in the first half of the play) appears and encourages him by quoting Chinese legends, and promises to assist him before disappearing. Soon after, as Munechika is getting ready, a fox, the incarnation of Inari Myojin (the main character in the second half of the play), appears and forges a sword, engraving "Kokaji Munechika" on the front and "Kogitsune" (little fox) on the back, thus completing the famous sword Kogitsunemaru. This time, many young Noh actors will appear, with the main character at the center. In this play, Munechika's earnest efforts to forge a sword can be seen as mirroring the journey of an artist who continues to hone their craft, and there are endless highlights to enjoy.
