Noh Sanemori Asami Jiichi

Noh Nomiya Kitanami Takahiro

Kyogen Neonkyoku Nomura Mansai

Noh Kagekiyo Mano Masaki

Hana no Koan is a Noh performance organized by three Kanze-ryu Shite-kata Noh actors: Asami Jiichi, Mano Masaki, and Kitanami Takahiro. A master who has mastered the koan, even if his Noh performance declines, will retain the flower (from the third chapter of the Fūshikaden). Hana no Koan is named after a passage from the Fūshikaden, written by Zeami, who is known as the great master of Noh. Originally, a koan means a "difficult question" in Zen dialogue. However, Zeami repurposed it to mean "ingenuity," likening the beauty in Noh to a flower and explaining the importance of leaving behind the true flower.

Noh play: Sanemori

As a traveling priest (Waki) is preaching in Shinohara, Kaga Province, an old man (Mae-Shite) appears. Only the priest can see him, and the old man speaks of Saito Sanemori, who died in the Genpei War, revealing that he himself is Sanemori before disappearing.

As the priest, having heard from a villager (Ai) about Sanemori's final moments, chants Buddhist prayers to mourn him, the spirit of Sanemori (Ato-Shite), clad in armor, appears. He speaks of how, despite being an old warrior, he valued his reputation and dyed his hair black before going into battle, and of his regret at being killed by Tezuka Taro before his battle with Kiso Yoshinaka, before disappearing after asking for prayers for his soul.

Noh Nonomiya

In autumn in Sagano, a traveling monk (Waki) visits the former site of Nonomiya when a woman (Mae-Shite) appears before him, holding a branch of a sacred sakaki tree. The woman recounts the story of Lady Rokujo, who parted ways with Hikaru Genji in this very place, and reveals herself to be that person before disappearing.

After the monk hears the story of Lady Rokujo and Hikaru Genji again from a villager (Ai), he begins to perform a memorial service, when the spirit of Lady Rokujo (Ato-Shite) appears in an ox-drawn carriage and speaks of the humiliation she suffered in the carriage dispute with Lady Aoi and her lingering feelings for Hikaru Genji. And under the autumn moon, he danced, reminiscing about the days gone by, and then vanished once again.

Noh Kagekiyo

Akushichibei Kagekiyo (Shite), who made a name for himself as a fierce general on the Taira side, was blind after the fall of the Taira and lived a lonely life in Hyuga Province. His long-lost daughter, Hitomaru (Tsure), comes to visit him, but Kagekiyo is ashamed of his fallen state and cannot reveal his name.

When Hitomaru learns from a villager (Waki) that the old man is Kagekiyo, she visits him again, and Kagekiyo finally reveals his identity. Then, at his daughter's request, he recounts his heroic deeds in the Battle of Yashima, his spirit palpable in the past. However, that glory is now a thing of the past. Resigned to his fate, Kagekiyo entrusts his daughter with the task of performing memorial services for him in the afterlife, and father and daughter face their moment of farewell.
