Noh: The Horsetail, Kanze Tetsunojo
Kyogen: Kanko, Nomura Man
Noh: Dojoji, Kanze Atsuo
The Horsetail A monk from the capital travels down the Kiso Road to visit the hometown of the young Matsuwaka, arriving at Mount Sonohara in Shinano Province. A group of horsetail cutters appears, admiring the surrounding autumn scenery, and begins cutting the horsetail. Among them is an elderly man who tells the monks that the horsetail of Mount Sonohara is a famous plant, even featured in waka poetry. He leads them to a broom tree in Fushiya Forest, also featured in waka poetry, and prays for the prosperity of the art of waka poetry. The old man eventually invites the monks into his home for a night's stay and begins to tell them his story. He says he had a child, but one day he went missing. Since then, he has built a house on this spot and has been asking passersby about her whereabouts. The old man then dons his son's dance costume, recalling his son's performance. He dances wildly, tears streaming down his face... Matsuwaka eventually identifies himself as the old man's son, and the father and son are joyfully reunited.
The master had entrusted Tarō Kaja with a rare three-fruited tangerine (a rare mandarin orange with three fruits on one branch) the previous night. When asked to return it, the master initially pretends not to know, but finally accepts his master's questioning and begins to outline the events. One rolled toward the gate, and he picked it up and ate it, saying, "A good thing (tangerine) never leaves the gate." Another one he had in his pocket was crushed by the tsuba of his sword, and he ate it in the same way. When asked about the remaining one, the master reveals a sad story, and suddenly begins the story of Shunkan, the monk who was left alone on the island of Kikaigashima...
Dojoji Temple: The cherry blossoms are in full bloom at Dojoji Temple in Kishu. Today is the day of the bell memorial service to restore the long-lost bell, and the monks strictly prohibit women from entering. A Shirabyoshi dancer enters the garden on the condition that she will perform a dance. While dancing, she looks up resentfully at the bell and leaps into it, causing it to fall with a loud clang. Long ago, a woman fell in love with a mountain ascetic, and her obsession turned her into a snake. She melted the ascetic, hiding inside the temple's bell, and killed him, along with the bell. Believing that the Shirabyoshi dancer is likely the vengeful spirit of that woman, the monks pray with all their spiritual powers and pull up the bell. Then, the snake-like woman emerges from within the bell and violently challenges the monks, who are praying earnestly... This Noh play depicts a woman's unfathomable passion through a series of breathtakingly tense scenes, centered around the fierce and spirited rhythm of the rhythmic rhythm, including the bell-entering and the fierce battle with the monk.
