About the Sasarindou Kikka Nohgaku Fund
This fund was established by the wishes of a woman who practiced chanting and musical accompaniment as a hobby, with the aim of providing opportunities for young Noh performers who have few opportunities to perform on stage, as well as for the future development and preservation of Nohgaku.
With the aim of protecting and nurturing Japan's wonderful culture, we plan to continue holding performances at least once a year.
We would be grateful for your support and attendance.
Shima dance: Miwa Kuse, played by Umewaka Shinaga
Kasuga Dragon God: Umewaka Kagehide
Kyogen: Kenbutsuzaemon, played by Nomura Yuki
Noh: Ataka, played by Kanze Atsuo
Kenbutsuzaemon
A man named Kenbutsuzaemon goes to see the Fukakusa Festival at Fujinomori Shrine in Fukakusa, Kyoto, and while looking around, he ends up wrestling himself...
This is a Kyogen play handed down only in the Izumi school, featuring a solo performance as its highlight.
Ataka
After the fall of the Taira clan, Yoshitsune, pursued by his brother Yoritomo, disguises himself as a mountain ascetic and heads to Oshu with Benkei and others. Hearing this, Yoritomo erected new checkpoints in various places and ordered strict controls on the passage of mountain ascetics.
The location was Kaga Province. Yoshitsune and his party approached the Ataka Barrier, which was guarded by a certain Togashi. They pretended to be mountain ascetics fundraising for the reconstruction of Todaiji Temple, and disguised Yoshitsune as a warrior in an attempt to pass through. However, Togashi insisted that he would not let any mountain ascetics pass, so the party began their final religious service, determined to be punished accordingly. Overwhelmed by their spirit, Togashi ordered them to read the Kanjincho (fundraising scroll) aloud, as Benkei was quick to disguise it as the Kanjincho and read it aloud in a loud voice. Impressed by his quick thinking, Togashi allowed the party to pass.
However, noticing that the warrior accompanying them resembled Yoshitsune, Togashi confronted the party again. The group holds their swords close, nervously bracing for their master's safety. Despite the potentially explosive situation, Benkei calmly controls the situation, mercilessly beating Yoshitsune with his staff, claiming that Yoshitsune's strength is similar to Yoshitsune's. The two continue to face off fiercely, but finally, overwhelmed by the group's spirit, Togashi allows them to pass.
Relieved that nothing bad happened, the group leaves the barrier and rests for a while. When Benkei apologizes for his earlier rudeness, Yoshitsune, in return, praises his quick thinking and laments his current state of affairs.
Togashi then appears, chasing after them to apologize for his earlier rudeness, and offers them sake. Benkei accepts the sake cup, dances vigorously, and hurries off to Oshu.
This masterpiece of contemporary Noh is known as the prototype for the Kabuki play "Kanjincho." Cornered, Benkei risks his life to protect his lord. His quick wit and boldness allow him to escape the predicament with a breathtaking plot and the powerful tension that only a multi-act play can offer.
