Noh: Takasago
The priests of Aso Grand Shrine (waki and wakitsure) visit Takasago Bay in Harima Province and encounter an elderly couple (mae-shite and tsure) sweeping the shade of a pine tree. They explain that the pine trees of Takasago, paired with the pine trees of Suminoe in the distant Sumiyoshi, are known as "pine trees of mutual growth." The evergreen pine trees represent the eternal reign of the emperor, and are therefore often praised in waka poetry. They then reveal that they are incarnations of the pine trees, promising to meet again in Sumiyoshi before disappearing. After hearing the pine tree's story from the Takasago Bay local (ai), the group heads for Sumiyoshi. At this moment, Sumiyoshi Myojin (later shite) appears and performs a dance to celebrate the reign of peace. In the small, eight-stage dance, the dance gains pace and becomes even more celebratory. Noh: Parrot Komachi (Oumu Komachi) Yukiie (waki), the new Dainagon (chief minister) serving Emperor Yozei, travels to Sekiji Temple in Omi Province as an imperial envoy to visit Ono no Komachi (shite), who has just turned 100. Komachi, who lives as a beggar, appears there, and Yukiie conveys a song of sympathy from the Emperor. Thinking of the Emperor's kindness, Komachi replies, echoing the song. Though Komachi has aged and lost her energy, she displays her former talent, which brings her back to memories. She quietly dances, recalling the performance of Ariwara no Narihira's performance of a Buddhist ritual on Tamatsushima Island. As dusk falls, Komachi sadly sees off Yukiie as he returns to the capital, and returns to her hermitage.
Noh: Heavy Burden of Love
Yamashina Shoji (shite), an old man who looks after the chrysanthemums in the gardens of the Shirakawa Emperor, is in love with the Empress (tsure). Upon learning of his feelings, the Empress promises through her subordinate (waki) that she will appear if he is able to lift a load wrapped in brocade. However, the load is so heavy that no matter how hard he tries, he is unable to lift it, and the old man dies in rage. Later, while the Empress is mourning her death, Shoji suddenly becomes unable to move, and as a ghost he appears, complaining of the pain of hell and blaming the Empress for her actions. However, if she is to be mourned, he promises to erase his grudge and protect the Empress, before finally disappearing.
