Noh: Hashibenkei (Benkei of the Bridge) by Ando Takayasu

Kyogen: Nabehachibachi (Battle of the Nabehachi) by Nomura Taichiro

Noh: Nomori (Guardian of the Fields) by Shimizu Kanji

Hashibenkei (Benkei of the Bridge)

It's the day of Musashibō Benkei's full visit to Gojo Tenjin Shrine. Having recently heard of a boy of about 12 or 13 years old going around slashing people, Benkei heads to Gojo Bridge late at night.

Meanwhile, Ushiwakamaru has resolved to return to Kurama Temple, and gazes at the moon from the bridge as a final farewell. There, the two meet and engage in a sword fight, but Benkei is defeated when Ushiwaka knocks down his long sword. The two then swear to be master and servant.

This Noh play depicts the fateful encounter between Benkei and Ushiwakamaru.

Nabe Yatsubachi

Upon seeing a sign announcing that the first person to arrive at the market would be exempt from taxes as the market's representative, a kakko seller arrives first before dawn and falls asleep on the spot. A second shallow pot seller then arrives and falls asleep as well. Waking up, both claim to be the first to arrive...

Nomori (Field Guardian)

A mountain ascetic from Mt. Haguro visiting Kasuga Village asks an old man about a mysterious pool of water. He is told that it is the "Field Guardian's Mirror," in which the image of the field guardian is reflected. The old man explains that the original Nomori Mirror is actually a mirror held by a demon that once lived in a mound in this area, and before long, the old man enters the mound. As the mountain ascetic is offering a prayer, a demon appears from the earth...

This demonic Noh play unfolds in contrast between a generous, ancient, poetic world and a majestic, mystical world.
