overview
TOKYO NOVYI ART was founded in 2004 by Leonid Anisimov, artistic director, through the merger of three theater companies, originally the Tokyo Novyi Repertory Theatre. Including activities prior to this, 25 years have passed since the founding of the group, which gathered together to study the Stanislavsky System, which Anisimov researched and practiced. During this time, we encountered many people, resulting in the creation of "The Kojiki" and "The Tale of Genji." The former was written by Toji Kamata, the original author, and the latter by Otohiko Kaga, who encouraged us to adapt it for the stage. Without these two people, both of whom have now passed away, these works would not have been possible. And without the work "The Kojiki," we would never have used the Noh stage. Since then, we have repeatedly performed in the unique space of the Noh stage. After many years, "The Tale of Genji" premiered in 2024, with Yuka Nakazawa writing the script and designer Shingo Tokihiro creating the costumes. We have been working with the hope of delivering intuitive creativity to our actors and living emotions that nourish the soul and consciousness of our audiences. Furthermore, in order to spread the Stanislavski System, we have opened the Tokyo International Stanislavski Academy, now in its 13th year, where students can receive direct instruction from Anisimov.
After meeting religious philosopher Toji Kamata, who studied Shinto and folklore, TOKYO NOVYI ART's "Kojiki" was born from his work "Super Translation of the Kojiki." Since its premiere, the work has been performed monthly in the studio without an audience.
In gratitude for the kindness of Professor Kamata, who passed away on May 30, 2025, we have decided to hold this memorial performance.
This will be the first performance outside of Japan since our overseas performance seven years ago, and the first performance in Japan in a long time.
And, "The Tale of Genji," which has been well received since its premiere last year.
This is a special planned performance featuring two ritualistic works by TOKYO NOVYI ART.
