overview
The Umewaka-kai aims to widely promote Noh, a traditional Japanese performing art that has been passed down for over 600 years. Led by the first Umewaka Minoru, who worked hard to revive Noh under Iwakura Tomomi in the Meiji era, the group has continued to take on innovative challenges to adapt to the times without compromising the essence of Noh. Led by Living National Treasure Umewaka Minoru, the Umewaka family is said to possess an elegant style of performance unique to the Kanze school. Among those who have trained under Umewaka are Ernest Fenollosa (an Oriental art historian and philosopher) and Shirasu Masako (an essayist and the first woman to perform on a Noh stage).
In "Noh Meets Fusion," students will record their own chants while exploring the similarities and differences between Noh and fusion music, and reexamine the essence of the voice through collaboration with other disciplines. Through multifaceted learning from other disciplines alongside top instructors, students will reconsider the value of the classics, providing an opportunity for the next generation of artists to broaden their horizons. Through a series of study groups and workshops, a special collaborative performance will be presented as a result.
