The year is 1661 in the Zipangu calendar.
In the era ruled by Tokugawa Iena, the fourth shogun of the Edo shogunate, a shift from "military rule" to "civilian rule" was underway. The prestige of the samurai was declining, and it was a transitional period in which education and legal systems would govern Edo.
Messages were sent from Edo to all parts of Zipangu.
"Select the best martial artist from Kai, Echigo, Oshu, Owari, Aki, Akame, other provinces, and our Edo. The eight will compete, and the country that survives will be promised the eternal beauty of the samurai."
