overview

"Hibiki no Kai" is a group formed in 1991 by Kanji Shimizu and Takao Nishimura as a place for study and creation.

This time, we will present masterpieces of Noh and Kyogen depicting events on a snowy day.

Kyogen: Kirokuda (Yasutaro Yamamoto)

Noh: Hachinoki (Kanji Shimizu)

Kyogen: Kirokuda

Taro Kaja, at his master's command, sets out to his uncle's house with thirty pieces of lumber and a barrel of sake. A heavy snow is falling, and snow is accumulating on his hat and straw raincoat as he leads six oxen up the mountain pass. When he arrives at a teahouse, he drinks all the sake that was given to him due to the cold, and then leaves the teahouse with six pieces of lumber and falls asleep. What excuse will Taro Kaja give to his uncle?

The transition and contrast from herding cattle in the snow to drinking at a teahouse is vivid. Snow, cattle, and humans are all part of nature's workings. Enjoy the Yamamoto family's version, which includes dances of "Rabbit" and "Snowy Mountain."

Noh play Hachinoki

Sano, Kozuke Province. A traveling monk (Waki, actually Regent Saimyoji Tokiyori), struggling in a heavy snowstorm, is given lodging at the humble home of Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo (Shite). Tsuneyo entertains the monk by burning his cherished bonsai trees of plum, pine, and cherry blossoms, and shows his spirit by promising to be the first to rush to Kamakura's aid in times of crisis, despite his fallen state. Upon returning to Kamakura, Saimyoji summons troops from various provinces and praises Tsuneyo, who has kept his promise and arrived on a skinny horse, carrying a rusty naginata. In addition to his original territory, Tokoyo is given land related to Hachinoki, and he returns home in high spirits. This is a dialogue-centered work in which the spirits of men unfold. From Tokoyo's appearance, which begins with "Ah, the snow has fallen," the audience is drawn into the feelings of the main character. In recent years, expectations are high for Shimizu Kanji, the main character who exudes dignity and inner depth through his face.
