Roren

A traveling monk on a pilgrimage throughout the country finds himself staying at an inn as night falls. The innkeeper asks his wife to prepare a meal and then asks the monk to teach him. The innkeeper is moved by the sermon and decides to become a monk himself. The innkeeper then asks for a Buddhist name, and the monk, who has never given a name to anyone before, combines the Iroha poem with the character "Ren," which has been used to name members of the innkeeper's family for generations, and names him "Roren." However, his wife, unaware of this, sees the innkeeper in his monastic attire...

Yorimasa

A traveling monk on a pilgrimage throughout the country is on his way to Nara when he stops in the village of Uji and meets a certain old man. As the two men admired the scenic beauty of Uji, the sun began to set, and the old man led the monk to Byodo-in Temple. There, they found a patch of grass shaped like a fan, with a mysterious history. The old man recounted the story of the "fan grass."

This Byodo-in Temple is where, long ago, Minamoto no Yorimasa raised an army to overthrow the Taira clan, supporting Prince Mochihito of Takakura-no-miya. Yorimasa then laid a fan on the ground and committed suicide, and so it is now a historical site of this great general...

Coincidentally, today is the day of the battle at the Imperial Palace. As soon as he revealed that he was actually the ghost of Yorimasa, the old man vanished.

Drawn by the monk's chanting, Yorimasa, dressed in monastic attire and armor, appeared and recounted the events of the Battle of Uji River...
