Kyogen: Irumagawa
A feudal lord from the eastern provinces, on his way back from the capital to Kanto, comes across the Irumagawa River in Musashi Province and asks a villager where the shallows are. The villager says they are upstream, but the lord steps into the rapids just ahead and nearly drowns. The lord angrily argues that if it's "Iruma's backwards dialect," the shallows must be just ahead. The lord and the villager continue to communicate in backwards dialect, and the lord uses backwards dialect to take back the gift.
Noh: Kagekiyo
After the Genpei War, Hitomaru, the daughter of Kagekiyo, a samurai general on the Taira side, travels from Kamakura to Hyuga Province in Kyushu to visit her father. Her father, Kagekiyo, has become a blind biwa player and lives a beggarly life. He pretends not to know his daughter and treats her like a stranger. However, when the girl returns to visit him again accompanied by a villager, Kagekiyo softens his heart and the two are reunited. Kagekiyo tells her about his experience of pulling the armor against Mihotani Shiro, an enemy warrior, in a strength contest at the Battle of Yashima, and then bids farewell.
