Kakushidanuki (Hidden Tanuki)

Taro Kaja, a master of tanuki fishing, hastily goes to the market to sell the tanuki he caught the previous night, so that his master will not find out. There, he bumps into his master, who had come to verify the truth of the rumors...

Ukifune (Floating Boat)

On his journey from Hatsuse to Kyoto, a monk stops in the village of Uji and meets a woman in a small boat lamenting her homelessness.

The woman begins to tell the story of Ukifune, who lived in the village of Uji long ago, as described in "The Tale of Genji."

Ukifune, sheltered by Kaoru Chujo, lived in hiding in Uji. Meanwhile, Ukifune was also loved by Nioumiya, who had secretly come to visit her, and tormented by her love torn between the two, she eventually disappeared without a trace... The woman, though hesitant, recounts the story in detail, saying that she lives in Ono, near the capital. She then reveals that she is suffering from an evil spirit and disappears, seeking help from a monk. After speaking with the villagers, the monk becomes convinced that the woman he saw earlier was the ghost of Ukifune and travels to Ono to begin the funeral service. Drawn by the sound of the Buddhist chanting, the ghost of Ukifune appears and recounts how, after much anguish, she threw herself into the Uji River but was saved by Yokokawa Sozu and taken to Ono. Praising the compassion of Kannon at Hatsuse-dera Temple, the spirit of Ukifune, freed from her obsession, disappears at dawn. This Noh play depicts the story of Ukifune, torn between two noblemen.
