Hōkazō (Wandering Monk)
After an argument, Makino Saemon, a man from Shimotsuke Province, was killed by Tone Nobutoshi, who lived in Sagami Province. His orphaned son, Kojirō, goes to his brother, who has become a monk, to ask for help in seeking revenge. When his brother refuses, Kojirō persuades him using a Chinese story, and the brothers plan to disguise themselves as a wandering monk and a street performer to get close to their enemy, and leave their hometown.
Meanwhile, Nobutoshi has been having bad dreams lately, so he goes to visit Mishima Myōjin in Seto. Just then, Nobutoshi and the two wandering monks meet. The two, calling themselves Ukigumo and Ryusui, approached Nobutoshi, and tried to take advantage of his vulnerability by performing Zen koans, dances, and drumming... A tense Noh play full of performances, with the actors showcasing one art after another in the presence of their enemy. Hagi Daimyo A country daimyo from a distant province, who has been in Kyoto for a long time, is bored after his lawsuit is over, so he goes to see a garden in full bloom with bush clover, guided by his servant Taro Kaja. He is asked to compose a poem there, so the uneducated daimyo has one prepared in advance, but the uncultured daimyo makes one slip of the tongue and forgets the poem his servant taught him... Suma Genji Fujiwara no Okinori, a shrine official from Hyuga Province, visits Suma Bay, where Hikaru Genji is said to have once lived in solitude. Then an old man appears and places flowers on a single cherry tree, telling Kōhan that it is the famous young cherry tree of Suma, and hinting that he is actually Hikaru Genji, before disappearing.
Late at night, the moonlight shines on Suma Bay. Soon, as if in time with the sound of the waves, beautiful music is heard, and Hikaru Genji descends from Tusita Heaven, frolicking in the waves and performing a graceful dance.
This is a noble Noh play whose highlights are the lyrics that cleverly incorporate the names of chapters from "The Tale of Genji" and the elegant dance of Hikaru Genji.
