■ ── 東海道四谷怪談 あらすじ ──

ご存知怪談狂言の傑作。

塩冶家の浪人・四谷左門にはお岩という娘があり、またお岩は伊右衛門の妻でした。しかし伊右衛門が御用金を横領したことを知った左門は、お岩を連れ戻します。それを恨みに思った伊右衛門は、左門を殺害。そうとは知らず、悲嘆に暮れるお岩を騙し、伊右衛門は、仇を討ってやるとまで言い出します。

その後、お岩は伊右衛門との間に子を産みますが、産後の病に苦しんでいます。そんなお岩を煩わしく思っている所に、隣家の伊藤喜兵衛からお岩に薬が届けられますが、この薬… 実は喜兵衛の孫娘お梅と伊右衛門を添わせたいがために、毒薬でお岩を醜い姿にし、伊右衛門に愛想をつかせようという計略。

お岩は、伊右衛門に恨みを募らせながら息絶える。

一方…小仏小平又之丞をお主として世話をする小平は、又之丞の病を治したいその一心で薬を伊右衛門から盗み、それが露見し、無惨な折檻の末、伊右衛門に殺されてしまう。

二人は幽霊となり、彷徨いはじめる……

■ ── Synopsis of the Tokaido Yotsuya Ghost Story ──

A well-known masterpiece of ghost story kyogen.

Yotsuya Samon, a ronin of the En'ya family, had a daughter named Oiwa, who was also the wife of Iemon. However, when Samon learned that Iemon had embezzled official funds, he took Oiwa back. Iemon, harboring resentment, murdered Samon. Unaware of this, Iemon deceived the grieving Oiwa and even promised to take revenge for her.

Afterward, Oiwa gave birth to a child with Iemon, but suffered from an illness after childbirth. Just as Iemon finds Oiwa a nuisance, his neighbor, Ito Kihei, delivers medicine to her. However, this medicine is actually a scheme by Kihei to make Oiwa look hideous and make Iemon lose interest in her, all in order to marry his granddaughter, Oume. Oiwa dies, her hatred for Iemon growing. Meanwhile, Kohei, who takes care of Kobutsu Kohei Matanojō as his master, steals medicine from Iemon in his desperate desire to cure Matanojō's illness. When he is discovered, he is brutally beaten and killed by Iemon. The two become ghosts and begin to wander...
