The client wanted to hold a memorial service for the deceased, but there was no suitable person in the area, so he decided to ask a noble-looking monk from the neighboring town. However, the monk had never actually given a sermon before. So the monk thought of having a mourner at the sermon venue to liven up the atmosphere, and promised to give half of the donations to the well-known Nakiama, who accompanied him.
Once he started sermon, the nun fell asleep early, and the monk became worried while sermoning...
This kyogen satirizes the greed of clergymen who are supposed to have left the secular world behind.
Noh play Nue
After a pilgrimage to Kumano, a monk is spending the night at a temple by the river in Ashiya, Settsu Province, when suddenly, a mysterious boatman appears in a dilapidated boat. When the monk asks him who he is, the boatman says that he is the ghost of a Nue that had been tormenting Konoe-in and was defeated by Taira no Yorimasa, and begins to tell the whole story.
Night after night, Konoe-in complains of an unexplained pain. While Minamoto no Yorimasa waits to guard the palace, black clouds suddenly cover the sky. Yorimasa fires an arrow at the clouds. Feeling a hit, he sees that the arrow he has shot down is a monster with the head of a monkey, the tail of a snake, and the limbs of a tiger.
Having said this, the boatman disappears once again into the night waves.
As the monk is performing the funeral service, the Nue's ghost appears in its true form, recreating the scene of Yorimasa's death at the hands of Yorimasa's arrow, and the moment he rose to fame...
This Noh play beautifully contrasts and contrasts the life of Yorimasa, who spent his days like a dead tree after his brilliant achievements, with the existence of the Nue, whose fate is to live in the darkness.
