Shimai Arashiyama Kanze Atsuo
Noh Kumano Tanimoto Kengo
Shiga
Shiga Mountain in Omi Province, when the mountain cherry blossoms are in full bloom. This Noh play depicts the incarnation of the poet Otomo no Kuronushi preaching the way of waka poetry and praising the reign.
In the shimai, Kuronushi appears in the form of Shiga Myojin and dances in celebration of the reign amidst the peaceful spring scenery, showing the final part of the Noh play.
Arashiyama
Arashiyama in the full bloom of spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. This Noh play depicts the gods dancing under the sacred cherry tree, admiring the spring scenery of Arashiyama, and Zao Gongen also revealing his power.
The final part of the Noh play shows Zaō Gongen illuminating the land and promising the salvation of all sentient beings.
Kumano (Yuya)
Kumano, a courtesan from Ikeda-juku in Tōtōmi Province, was favored by Taira no Munemori and kept in the capital. Her elderly mother in her hometown was ill, so Kumano repeatedly asked Munemori for leave, but he refused.
Meanwhile, her mother was seriously ill, and her maid Asagao came with a letter from her mother. Kumano asked for leave again, but Munemori still refused, and to cheer her up, he sent an ox-drawn carriage to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and had her accompany him to see the cherry blossoms. Contrary to Kumano's lonely feelings, Kiyomizu-dera Temple was bustling with activity in full bloom. As she prayed for her mother's safety in the main hall, Munemori summoned Kumano to a drinking party and had her perform a dance. Underneath the fully bloomed cherry blossoms, Kumano dances with somber feelings. Suddenly, a shower falls, scattering the petals. With a heart lamenting the loss of the blossoms, he composes a song expressing his feelings for his mother, and even Munemori grants Kumano permission to return home.
A Noh play in the midst of the magnificent spring scenery of the capital, where each character's feelings are intertwined with the falling cherry blossoms.
