Oba-ga-sake (Aunt's Sake)
A nephew has never been treated to sake by his aunt, who runs a sake shop. So the nephew warns her, "There's a rumor that a terrifying demon lives around here, so be careful," and pretends to leave, but returns to his aunt's place. Disguised as a demon, the nephew threatens his surprised aunt and gets some sake, but soon gets drunk and falls asleep...
Hyakuman (Hill)
A monk from Miyoshino, accompanied by a young child he found at Saidaiji Temple in Nara, comes to see the large Buddhist chanting at Seiryoji Temple in Saga, which is bustling with many people.
The monk, wanting to comfort the child, asked the people at the temple gate if there was anything to entertain them with, and they told him that a female madwoman named Hyakuman would put on an amusing performance. The people at the gate then chanted a poor Buddhist prayer to lure Hyakuman out, and she took over, chanting and dancing.
Soon the child realized that Hyakuman was his mother from his hometown, and when the monk subtly inquired about her background, Hyakuman replied that she was a female dancer from Nara, widowed and separated from her child, and that her grief had driven her mad. She then performed a dance of religious rites, praying for a reunion with her child. She further recounted how she had wandered from place to place searching for her child and praised the miraculous power of Seiryoji Temple, where she finally arrived, narrating and dancing.
Amidst the crowd chanting the great Buddhist prayers, Hyakuman went mad searching for her child. The monk brought her and the child together, and mother and child rejoiced at their reunion, gave thanks for the merits of Buddhism, and returned to Nara together.
A Noh play set in Sagano in spring, in which Hyakuman, a master of dance and music, dances wildly in longing for his child.
