Kyogen: Oba-ga-Sake (Obaga Sake) by Yamamoto Rintaro
Noh: Hyakuman (One Million) by Uzawa Hikaru
Oba-ga-Sake (Obaga Sake)
A nephew has never been served sake by his aunt, who runs a sake shop. So the nephew tells his aunt, "Be careful, there's a rumor that a terrifying demon appears in this area," and pretends to leave, but returns to his aunt's house. Disguised as a demon, the nephew manages to scare his frightened aunt and get some sake, but soon becomes drunk and falls asleep...
Hyakuman (One Million)
A monk from Miyoshino brings a young child he found at Saidaiji Temple in Nara to see the bustling Dainenbutsu (Great Nembutsu) at Saga Seiryoji Temple.
To comfort the child, the monk asks the people at the temple if there is anything to see, and they say that a female madwoman named Hyakuman will perform an entertaining act. The people then lure Hyakuman out with a clumsy chant of Buddhist prayer, and Hyakuman takes the lead in chanting and dancing instead.
The child eventually realizes that Hyakuman is his mother from his hometown, and when the monk casually inquires about her identity, Hyakuman replies that she is a female dancer from Nara who lost her husband and was separated from her child, becoming confused and mad. She then performs a Dharma dance, praying to be reunited with her child. She then recounts her wanderings in search of her child and dances, praising the miraculous powers of Seiryoji Temple when she arrives.
Amid the crowd chanting Dainbutsu, Hyakuman goes berserk, searching for his child. The monk introduces her to the child, and the mother and child rejoice at their reunion and, grateful for the merits of Buddhism, return to Nara together.
A Noh play set in Sagano in spring, featuring a million master dancers dancing wildly as they yearn for their children.
