Shimai Matsukaze Shibata Minoru
Shimai Kikujido Uzawa Hikaru
Noh Tomomori Shimizu Kanji
Matsukaze
A Noh play overflowing with passionate love, in which Matsukaze and Murasame, two sisters who draw seawater, reminisce about the days they spent with Ariwara no Yukihira, recounting their story along with the beautiful scenery of Sumaura in autumn.
In the shimai, Matsukaze sees the image of Yukihira in a pine tree and longs for him, and the final scene shows her disappearing into the morning bay.
Kikujido
A bright and cheerful Noh play in which 700-year-old Jido prays for eternal youth and longevity on Mount Rekken in the Chugoku region.
In the final scene, Jido praises the merit of Myobun, who obtained the sacred water, and prays for the Emperor's reign.
Michimori
The sound of oars rowing boats can be heard softly on the bay of Naruto in Awa. A monk spending the summer there is chanting sutras every night to mourn the Taira clan when a couple appears in a fishing boat. The couple brings a bonfire closer to help with the midnight chanting, tells the story of Lady Kozaisho who drowned herself in this bay, and then disappears into the sea.
As the monk is performing a memorial service, wondering if the couple was the ghosts of Taira no Michimori and his wife Lady Kozaisho, the two appear in their former forms, drawn by the sound of the chanting. Michimori recounts his last meeting with Lady Kozaisho and the details of the battle, and as he listens to the chanting, his heart is soothed and he attains Buddhahood.
A Noh play depicting the tragic love story of two people who lived through a time of war.
