Ointment Refining (Koyakuneri)

Ointment renowned in the capital and Kamakura, both of whom consider themselves masters, decide to compare their ointments (ointments made by kneading oil together).

First, they compare genealogies and medicinal herbs, but neither side will give in with their exaggerated boasts. So next they decide to actually compare inhalations to determine which is better...

A Kyogen play with a bizarre idea and exaggeration that will make you laugh.

Yashima

A monk from the capital on a pilgrimage to the west arrives at Yashima Bay in Sanuki Province.

Just as the sun sets, the traveling monk and his group stay in an abandoned salt-grilling hut for the night. Just then, an old man and a young man, a fisherman, return to the salt hut, admiring the scenery of the harbor at dusk in spring.

At the monk's request, the old man begins to tell the story of the famous Genpei War.

The monk is suspicious of the old man, who recounts in detail the details of Akushichibei Kagekiyo and Mihotani Shiro's armor, and the end of Sato Tsugunobu. When the monk asks him his name, the old man hints that he is Yoshitsune and disappears.

As the night draws on, the spirit of Yoshitsune appears in the monk's sleep in his dreams, clad in his former splendid armor. Yoshitsune talks about the hardships of the Shura world and tells the monk about how he narrowly managed to recover his bow, which had been swept away by the waves during the Battle of Yashima.

Soon, Yoshitsune throws himself back into the endless battles of the Shura world, and disappears at dawn...

This is one of Zeami's masterpieces of Shura Noh, one of the three great Shura plays, along with "Tamura" and "Quiver."
