Yashima (Yashima)

A monk from the capital who was on a pilgrimage to the western region arrived at the ura of Yashima in Sanuki Province.

Just as the sun is setting, a group of traveling monks rent a night's lodging in an uninhabited salt-grilling hut. Then, an old man and a young fisherman return to the salt house, admiring the view of the lake at dusk in spring.

The old man is asked by the monk to tell him the story of the famous Genpei War.

Becoming suspicious of the old man who was telling too many details about the story of Kagekiyo Akushichibei and Shiro Mihoya, and the last moments of Tsugunobu Sato, the monk asked the old man his name, and the old man replied that he was Yoshitsune. It alludes to something and then disappears.

Eventually, as the night progressed, the spirit of Yoshitsune appeared in the sleeping monk's dream pillow, wearing his once splendid armor. Yoshitsune describes the hardships of Shurado, and tells the monk how he managed to recover a bow that had been washed away by the waves during the Battle of Yashima.

Eventually, Yoshitsune once again throws himself into the endless conflict of Shurado, and disappears at dawn...

Zeami's representative Shura Noh work is considered one of the three Katsushura works, along with Tamura and Kan.
