Hajitomi

In his younger days, Hikaru Genji met and fell in love with a woman (Yugao no Onna) who lived in a house where evening glories bloomed. The Noh play Hajitomi is a dreamlike Noh play in which the spirit of the evening glories recalls the memories of this time. A "Hajitomi" is a lattice door made of boards with lattices that can be opened by flipping it up. This type of door was also used for the gate of Yugao's house.

A monk from Unrin-in Temple in the capital is offering flowers to the Buddha during his summer retreat (a summer retreat without leaving the temple), when out of nowhere a young woman appears and offers him white flowers. Following the woman's words, who vanished and implies that she is "someone from around Gojo", the monk heads to the Gojo area, where a half-sash window appears from a house covered in grass, and the ghost of a evening glory flower appears. She dances, reminiscing about her meeting with Genji through the evening glory flower, but as dawn breaks she disappears back into the half-sash window.

The shite, Yugao, does not mention her own final moments, when she is possessed and killed by a spirit, but instead focuses on the memory of their happy meeting.

Usually, the Tachibana memorial service in the first act is merely depicted in the chants, leaving it to the audience's imagination, but in this kogaki (alternative performance) of "Tachibana Memorial Service", an actual Tachibana flower appears on stage. In the past, artificial flowers were sometimes used, but nowadays live flowers are often used, and various flower arrangers, including the formal Ikenobo Tachibana, arrange flowers on stage. This time, Otsuka Rikko of the old school will play this role.
