Noh: Togane Koji
On his way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a traveler encounters Togane Koji, a half-layman, half-monk who is fundraising for the construction of a bridge over Shirakawa. When the traveler asks about today's sermon, the monk skillfully replies, "Willows are green, flowers are red, everything lies in the human heart," and preaches about the indeterminate nature of the three worlds, enticing the traveler to join the fundraising. He then goes on to entice the traveler into Buddhism by performing a kumibu dance and beating a kakko drum.
The highlights of this Noh performance are the Zen training of Kakushoku, who maintains his secular appearance, and the entertainments provided by Togane Koji.
Kyogen: Akagari
On the way to a tea ceremony, Tarokaja is ordered by his master to carry him across a swollen river. However, he refuses, citing his chapped skin. The master offers to carry Tarokaja across the river instead, provided he composes a poem about chapped skin...
Noh: Ama
Minister Fujiwara Fusasaki learns the secret of his birth: his mother was a fisherman from Shido Bay in Sanshu. While visiting a place for memorial services, he meets the fisherman and learns that his mother sacrificed her life to retrieve the jewel stolen by the dragon god, in order to make him the successor to Lord Tankai. Eventually, his mother's spirit appears in the form of a dragon girl...
This Noh performance features the "Tama no Dan" (Tama-no-dan), a reenactment of the fisherman's retrieval of the jewel, and the religious solemnity of the second half.
