Kyogen: Irumagawa, Nomura Mansai

Irumagawa (Irumagawa)

A feudal lord from the eastern provinces, who had been in Kyoto for a long time due to a lawsuit, was returning home with Tarokaja when he came to a large river.

The feudal lord, unable to find the crossing, asked a man on the opposite bank. The man told him that this was the Irumagawa River, that he lived in Iruma, that he was also named Iruma, and that the shallows were upstream. However, for some reason, the feudal lord jumped into the river, fell into the deep end, and got completely soaked. The feudal lord hastily concluded that the man was speaking in Iruma-sama (backwards dialect)...

Oshio (Oshio)

Oharayama, on the western outskirts of Kyoto, is famous for its cherry blossoms. The group, who came to view the flowers, encounters the nobleman, looking gorgeous with a cherry blossom branch in his hair. As they enjoy the viewing, the nobleman begins to speak.

The poem, "Today, even on Mount Ohara and Mount Oshio, I cannot help but recall the days of the gods," was composed by Ariwara no Narihira, who accompanied Empress Nijō on a royal visit to Oharano long ago. The "days of the gods" in this poem refer to the pact between Narihira and the empress.

As he tells the group, the nobleman laments his longing for the past. As the group enjoys cherry blossom viewing with the nobleman, who has a refined heart, and gets drunk, the nobleman disappears without a trace.

The group wonders if the nobleman they saw earlier is Narihira's spirit, and waits for their reunion. Then, Narihira appears in his former self, riding a cherry blossom viewing cart. Under the moonlit sky, where the blossoms bloom brilliantly, Narihira reminisces about his past love and disappears into the dreams of the flower-viewing audience.

A tale of tender love told against the backdrop of the mountains on a spring evening.
