Yoroboshi

Michitoshi of Takayasu in Kawachi Province believed the slander of others and banished his own son, Shuntokumaru. To atone for his sin, he performed a seven-day ordeal at Tennoji Temple, where Shuntokumaru, now a blind beggar, appeared. Unaware of his father's actions, Shuntokumaru received the ordeal and reflected on the merits of Tennoji Temple. Soon it was time for Nissokan (a practice of contemplating the setting sun and imagining the Pure Land). In Shuntokumaru's mind's eye, the familiar scenery of Naniwa Bay came vividly to mind. Soon father and son introduced themselves to each other and returned to the village of Takayasu.

A blind boy finds his heart in the plum blossoms scattered on his sleeves and cherishes their fragrance. A beautiful Noh play that portrays a pure inner landscape amidst a sad and cruel fate.

Oni no Mamako (The Demon's Stepchild)

As a woman is about to return to her parents' home, carrying her child, she approaches Inamino in Harima when a demon suddenly attacks her. The demon offers to save her in exchange for her becoming his wife, and the woman reluctantly prepares. The demon looks after the child during this time, but the child looks so delicious that he can't help but...

Miwa

A woman visits the monk Genbin, who lives in seclusion at the foot of Mount Miwa in Yamato Province, every day. The woman, lamenting the passage of time she has lived, appears again today and asks the monk for a garment to ward off the cold night. The woman receives the garment and prepares to leave, but when the monk asks her name, she tells him to look for the foot of Mount Miwa using the cedar tree as a landmark, and then disappears. Genbin, having received word from the villagers, goes to Mount Miwa and finds the garment hanging on the branch of a sacred tree and a waka poem written in golden characters. Then a wondrous voice is heard from the shade of the tree, and Miwa Myojin appears... A mystical Noh play weaving together the legend of the divine marriage of Miwa and the story of Ama-no-Iwato. *Please apply for U25 tickets (for those under 25) by phone (03-3401-2285). *Please note that the program and performers may change without notice due to unforeseen circumstances. *Entry and exit to the auditorium may be restricted during the performance. *Actions that disturb other customers, as well as bringing in dangerous items and alcoholic beverages, are strictly prohibited.
