Kyogen: Suehirogari (The Wide-Opening of the End) by Nomura Yuki

Noh: Takasago, Kanze Tetsunojo, Kanze Atsuo

Suehirogari (The Wide-Opening of the End)

Taro Kaja is sent on a mission for his master (the lucky one) to buy a fan. However, he is tricked by a con man (Suppa) and ends up buying an umbrella. When the master finds out, he is furious. The Kaja tries to appease his master by singing and cheering...

This kyogen play is filled with joyful, heartfelt laughter as the performers sing and dance in ecstasy to the music.

Takasago (Takasago)

On his way to Kyoto, Tomonari, the priest of Aso Shrine in Higo Province, stops at Takasago Bay in Harima Province. An elderly couple appears sweeping the shade of a pine tree and speaks of the joys of pine trees and the virtues of waka poetry. The elderly couple reveal that they are actually spirits of the mutually growing pines of Takasago and Sumiyoshi, and disappear, saying they will wait in Sumiyoshi. Tomonari and his entourage, left behind, set sail on a moonlit night. When they arrive in Sumiyoshi, Sumiyoshi Myojin appears and performs a dance, praying for peace throughout the world and offering his blessing for the reign of the emperor.

This masterpiece of Zeami's waki-noh plays, centered around the evergreen pine tree, celebrates peace throughout the world and longevity. The purity of the first act and the powerful, dashing divine dance of the second act emphasize the celebratory nature of the piece.
