Naniwa
In the village of Naniwa in the New Year, Ojin (a scholar and physiognomist from Baekje who promoted Emperor Nintoku's succession to the throne) and Princess Konohana Sakuya praise the auspiciousness of the plum blossoms and celebrate the reign of the Emperor.
In the Shimai dance, Ojin performs a final scene celebrating the spring of his reign, set to lyrics interspersed with the titles of Bugaku (traditional Japanese dance) pieces.
Tohoku Kuse (Toboku)
Plum blossoms bloom at Tohokuin Temple. In this Noh performance, the spirit of Izumi Shikibu, who became a Bodhisattva of song and dance through the merit of her waka poetry, praises Tohokuin Temple.
In the final act, Shikibu's spirit praises the scenery of Tohoku-in and dances, reciting the virtues of waka poetry.
Kagekiyo
Akushichibei Kagekiyo, a former fierce warrior, was exiled to Kyushu, where he fell into poverty and became a blind Taira storyteller. While living a beggar-like life in Miyazaki, Hyuga, Kagekiyo's daughter, Hitomaru, visits him in search of her long-lost father. Despite knowing she is his daughter, Kagekiyo is ashamed of his current circumstances and hides his true identity, sending Hitomaru and his attendants on their way.
When Hitomaru learns from a villager that the blind man from earlier is Kagekiyo, he is guided by the villager back to Kagekiyo's hermitage.
At first, Kagekiyo denies the allegations, but when Hitomaru clings to him, he reveals his true identity and begins to recount his bravery at the Battle of Yashima... In contrast to his former bravery, he is now completely weakened. Thinking about his short life ahead of him, Kagekiyo bids him farewell and asks Hitomaru to perform a funeral after his death.
A Noh play of human emotion that speaks of past glory from a decaying reality.
